SACRAMENTO – With over 70% of the vote, the Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (SCDSA) overwhelmingly threw its support behind Captain Jim Cooper to be the next leader of the Sheriff’s Department.

SCDSA, representing 1,500 rank and file sergeants, deputies and non-sworn staff, and is the largest law enforcement association in Northern California,  had the majority of members voting, and at a margin of 4:1, Cooper was given the strongest vote of confidence to date by any candidate.

“Captain Jim Cooper possesses both the proven leadership skills and the political savvy to guide the Sheriff’s Department in the coming years. Our membership has spoken and we are committed to seeing that Captain Cooper becomes the next elected Sheriff for Sacramento County,” stated Kevin Mickelson, President of SCDSA.

Cooper, a 25-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, has attracted the support of all the major law enforcement groups in the county, including the Law Enforcement Manager's Association and the California Asian Peace Officers PAC, as well as the support from all major labor organizations and business groups.

"I am humbled and honored to have the support of the men and women I work with every single day," Cooper said. "This department is my family and I am committed to making sure they have the resources they need to protect all the families of Sacramento County."

Cooper has been recognized for his work investigating crimes committed by gang members, and has received numerous awards for his heroic undercover work, as well as the Bronze Star for Bravery received for his actions during the 1991 'Good Guys' Hostage Crisis.  Currently, Cooper leads the High-Tech Crimes Task Force, cracking down on identity thieves and Internet predators that target children online.  Cooper also serves as a founding City Council member for the City of Elk Grove.
